For dilating urethral strictures
Most silver catheters are extendable and were used primarily in females; they tended to come with a stilet.
Male versions were sometimes called "irrigating tunnelled and grooved sounds" and were used for dilating strictures of the male urethra. The catheter below right has a "Benique" curve which is designed to conform to the curves of the male urethra.

Some catheter sets are presented in beautiful silk-lined boxes. The examples below still contain the original, intact bottle which contained lubricant for the catheters. More recent examples are presented in sterilisable, metal trays.
