The stamp
This stamp shows Jozef Dietl and was issued in Poland in 1957. It is one of a series of famous Polish doctors.
The doctor
Jozef Dietl was born in Podbuze, Poland on 24 January 1804. He studied medicine in Lviv and Vienna, becoming a Professor of Jagiellonian University in Krakow, where was elected as its rector in 1861.
He subsequently became Mayor of Krakow between 1866 and 1874. He died in 1878.
He was a pioneer of balneotherapy (the presumed science of treating disease by bathing, a traditional medicine technique usually practiced at spas).
The urology connections
Dietl described the symptom of loin pain after drinking a fluid load which we now recognise as being associated with congenital pelviureteric junction (PUJ) obstruction.
