Graduated dilators for strictures
Described by Charles Joseph Phillips, the filiform whips are negotiated blindly through the stricture. If a single whip will not pass through the stricture, several whips are inserted at the same time of which one will usually pass the stricture (the "faggot" method).
A graduated dilator (right), with a screw thread on the end, is then attached to the whip (left) and used to dilate the urethra. Larger sizes are attached sequentially until the urethra has been dilated to the required calibre.
