Medals of Ronald Ogier Ward
First President of BAUS
Ronald Ogier Ward was the first President of BAUS (from 1945 to 1947). As a medical student he joined the Honorable Artillery Company (HAC), a volunteer regiment in London. After he qualified as a doctor from St Bartholomew's Hospital he was unable to get a job, so he volunteered for the Red Cross and treated the wounded in the first Balkan War.
In the First World War, he fought with his Artillery Regiment rather than joining up as a surgeon. He won the Military Cross (MC) and Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for bravery.
In the Second World War he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). He successfully evacuated his Field Ambulance Hospital from France after the rest of the army had left Dunkirk and was awarded a military OBE for his gallantry.
