The 2003 BAUS Annual Scientific Meeting took place from 23 to 27 June 2003 at Manchester International Conference Centre (MICC, pictured upper right), Windmill Street, Manchester.
This was the Association's first visit to the new Manchester conference centre, constructed in the former Central Station.
President's Welcome
BAUS President, Mr James Bramble, offered the following welcome to members and guests attending the 2003 meeting:
On behalf of the Council of the British Association of Urological Surgeons, it is my pleasure to invite you to our Annual Scientific Meeting held in Manchester from 23 to 27 June 2003.
Once again, we have arranged a stimulating programme that will cover the full range of Urology. The Office of Education has produced another excellent programme of Teaching Courses. In 2002, our Skills Courses were a great success and were over‐subscribed, so we are repeating them this year.
I would like to thank our Abstract Reviewers, the Programme Committee and, in particular, the BAUS Honorary Secretary, Phil Matthews, for the enormous amount of work that has gone into the planning of this meeting. Our visit to Manchester is long overdue as we last held a meeting there in 1966. Manchester, home of the world's most famous football club, is a vibrant, thriving city, which so successfully hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2002.
There is a fine City Art Gallery and, of course, the Lowry Centre (pictured right) where you can view the paintings of LS Lowry, one of Manchester's most famous citizens.
This is a fantastic venue for conferences with an enormous exhibition hall housed in the former Central railway station. The centre of Manchester is well provided with a range of hotels to suit every purse and numerous excellent restaurants, all within walking distance of the Conference Centre. I confidently predict that this will in future be one of our favourite venues.
So come to Manchester, meet your friends, exchange views, ask difficult questions and debate current issues in the best tradition of BAUS.
I look forward to welcoming you
