1963 Newcastle

There is only limited information about the 1963 Punch Club meeting in Newcastle upon Tyne, hosted by John Swinney.

It is, however, believed to be the first meeting at which the Punch Club cartoon was used although, unfortunately, there is no record of its creator.

John Swinney had worked at the Mayo Clinic with Gershom Thompson, "inventor" of the prostatic punch, and persuaded Thompson to come over to Newcastle for the event. Members attending the meeting were photographed with their distinguished guest (below):

Back row (L to R): George Harrison, Tommy Moore, Walter Mimpriss, Jerry Fergusson, James Cosbie Ross, David Innes Williams
Front row (L to R): Henry Hamilton Stewart, Tom Chapman, Gershom Thompson, John Swinney, Ronnie Reid

The front of the menu for the black-tie dinner marked the first appearance of the Club cartoon, as far as we are aware ...
