Frederick Swinford Edwards
1853 - 1939
Well known for his writings on rectal and urinary surgery
Frederick Swinford Edwards was born in Paddington on 17 January 1853.
He was educated at Dulwich College and St. Bartholomew's Hospital where he won junior and senior prizes in anatomy, and qualified in 1875. He then became house surgeon, demonstrator of anatomy and demonstrator of operative surgery.
Swinford Edwards was elected assistant surgeon to the West London Hospital in 1880, and joined the staff of St Peter's Hospital for Stone in 1881 and of St Mark's Hospital for Rectal Diseases in 1884.
He was an honorary member of the French Association d'Urologie and a member of the Association Internationale d'Urologie (now the SIU). He was well known for his work and writings on both rectal and urinary surgery.
He died on 29 May 1939 at the age of 86.
