Other Information

A Supper Dance was held in the ballroom suite of the Dorchester Hotel on 30 June, attended by 128 members and guests; dancing continued until 01.30 hr.

During the afternoon of 2 July, 71 members and guests were able to visit to the Houses of Parliament through the courtesy of Dr Stephen Taylor MP, Parliamentary Private Secretary to Mr Herbert Morrison (Leader of the House of Commons and Deputy Prime Minister).

On Sunday 3 July, 42 members and guests enjoyed a boat trip from Westminster Pier to Hampton Court, in what was described in the meeting minutes as "tropical heat".

Operating sessions and demonstrations were arranged at King's College Hospital, The Middlesex Hospital, The Postgraduate Medical School, All Saints' Hospital and St Peter's Hospital. There was also an opportunity to visit the Surgical Research Laboratories where members saw a demonstration of early kidney transplantation into the neck of a dog: the procedure had first been described by Emerich Ullman (pictured lower right) in 1902 but the transplants, without immunosuppression, all succumbed to renal infarction and renal vein thrombosis despite anticoagulation.
