1993 Brighton

The 1993 Punch Club meeting was hosted by Neville Harrison in Brighton.

Members were accommodated at the Brighton Thistle Hotel and, on the first evening, were welcomed by Neville & Gill to wine and food at their home in Ringmer.

Details of the scientific presentations, held at the Sussex Postgraduate Centre in Brighton General Hospital, can be viewed by clicking the link below:

The afternoon visit for Club members was a talk and guided tour of Barkham Manor vineyard in Piltdown, culminating in a tasting of some English white wines. These were the very early days of such wines: since then, Sussex wineries such as Nyetimber, Chapel Down & Ridgeview have gone on to win major prizes at international wine festivals, mostly for their sparkling wines (pictured right), often outclassing the top French champagne houses.

The black-tie Club dinner took place at Brighton Royal Pavilion (above). Click here to view the dinner menu and details of the live entertainment.

The host arranged for three singers and a pianist from First Act Opera to entertain members and their guests during the meal. Everyone who was present will remember scores of copper pans hanging on the wall of the kitchen reverberating in unison with the powerful, operatic voices ... an unforgettable experience.
