The instruments of David Gwyn Morris
One of the reasons for the original creation of the Museum of Urology was to bring together collections of Urological Instruments from Hospitals and Private collections throughout the country, so anyone could share them and see them easily.
These collections, both large and small, have been photographed so they can remain in their hospitals or collections, whilst also being showcased in the Museum of Urology. Some have been generously donated to the museum for safekeeping and future study.
These cystoscopes have been donated to the Museum of Urology by Mr Peter Morris the son of David Gwyn Morris (1917 - 1983). David Gwyn Morris was a Consultant Urologist at the United Cardiff Hospitals.
David Morris was born on 15th May 1917. He trained at University College, Cardiff and the Welsh National School of Medicine winning the Cardif MedicalSociety prizes in surgery and O&G. He was an anatomy demonstrator whilst still an undergraduate. He qualified in 1941 and in that year joined the RAMC as a Lieutenant. Morris was attached to the Durham Light Infantry serving in Burma, Africa, Italy and finally Germany.
In 1947 he returned to Cardiff as Senior Surgical Registrar at the Royal Infirmary, gaining the FRCS(Ed) that same year. In 1950 he was appointed Consultant Urologist to the United Cardiff Hospitals and Welsh Regional Hospital Board. He was elected as a member of BAUS at the AGM on 16 July 1959. The following year, at the June meeting in London, he presented a cine-film of his modified method of performing a Harris prostatectomy. By that time, he had carried out 750 procedures over a 10-year period.
His hobby, from the age of 12, was collecting antique weapons, with a special interest in firearms. He donated a machine gun to the local home guard on the outbreak of the Socond World War! This interst led to his most memorable presentation to BAUS at the 1968 meeting in Cardiff called, "The Urologist's Armamentarium".
