2012 Dublin

The 2012 Punch Club meeting was hosted in Dublin & Connemara by Tom Lynch from 10 to 14 October.


Dublin

In Dublin, members and their guests were accommodated in the luxurious Merrion Hotel, directly opposite the Irish Parliament building. On the first evening, members and their guests were wined and dined by Tom & Mona Lynch at their home in Ballsbridge.

The presentations all took place in the Packenham Suite of the hotel and are listed in the tables below:

THURSDAY 11 OCTOBER

The morning session, to which accompanying persons were also invited, was devoted to 40-minute individual talks by a stellar cast of figures from recent Irish history:

  • Dr Conor McCarthyMedical Director of the Irish Rugby Football Union & Consultant Rheumatologist;
  • Mr Fachtna Murphyformer Commissioner of the Garda Siochána (the Irish Police Force);
  • Mr Bertie Aherne - former Taoiseach (Prime Minister of Ireland); and
  • Ms Mary Harney - Former Minister for Health & holder of other cabinet posts.

On the afternoon of 11 October, members and guests were escorted on a long walk around the city of Dublin. The first stopping point was Trinity College Dublin for a guided tour of the Library and the Book of Kells - a 9th century gospel manuscript, famous throughout the world.

Next came The Little Museum of Dublin on St Stephen's Green. This is a people's museum that tells the story of the modern city where every item has been donated by members of the public.

Finally, the walking tour reached the National Gallery of Ireland for a guided tour of the highights.

On the evening of 11 October, the Club black-tie dinner was held at Farmleigh House & Estate, close to Phoenix Park.

Connemara

On the evening of 12 October, following the scientific session in Dublin, members and their guests were transferred by coach to Ballynahinch Castle in Connemara, Co Galway from where they were invited to join Tom & Mona Lynch for dinner at their "country getaway" in Roundstone.

On 13 October, members and their guests met in the hall of the Castle for a guided walk, followed by a bus tour of Connemara. On their return to the Castle, Des Lally of Ballynahinch Castle gave a talk.This was followed by short presentations from several Club members about their holiday destinations, followed by dinner in the Castle.

Holiday reminiscences were shared by Mike Dineen, Duncan Summerton, Philip Thomas, Damian Hanbury, Jeremy Noble, Mike Wallace & Adrian Joyce.
